Women’s Role in Islamic History Highlighted from Karbala to Arbaeen

The pivotal role of women in Islamic history — from their presence at Karbala to their participation in the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage — has been described as decisive in preserving and conveying the message of Imam Hussein (AS).

Hawzah News Agency- Speaking on the occasion of Arbaeen, religious scholars emphasized that women’s role goes far beyond physical presence, encompassing leadership, communication, and the transmission of religious truths in times of crisis.

In the events of Karbala, some objected to Imam Hussein (AS) bringing his family on the journey toward Kufa. However, the Imam insisted on their participation, recognizing the essential role women would play. Figures such as Hazrat Zaynab (AS) and other women of Karbala ensured that the tragedy of Ashura would be immortalized in the collective memory of the Muslim ummah.

Islamic history also records other examples of women in prominent leadership roles. The mother of Imam Hassan Askari (AS) was sent to Hajj as his representative, and Lady Hadith was appointed as a guardian of the community. Hakima Khatun, the aunt of Imam Hassan Askari (AS), played a key role in safeguarding and transmitting the teachings of the Ahlul Bayt (AS).

In modern times, the Arbaeen march continues to see strong participation by women despite challenges and hardships. Scholars stress that no gender-based restrictions should prevent anyone from taking part in this symbol of unity and solidarity.

The traditions of the Infallible Imams (AS), they note, affirm that women have the right to choose and to be active participants wherever their presence serves the cause of truth. Arbaeen, they add, stands as a testament to collective empathy, unity, and resistance — free from any form of gender discrimination.
